It’s with that story – and the idea that my time at Puget Sound is coming to an end just like the mature tree’s – that I write to you all for the first time this semester. My winter break was quite uneventful, with a couple of trips to the Oregon Coast, some time with friends, and the chance to shadow an oral surgeon. As soon as I returned to campus, though, it was down to work to prepare Gamma Phi Beta for Formal Recruitment. Me and my 70 (ish) Gamma Phi sisters figured out the logistics of Recruitment (also known as “Rush”) and bonded over everything from goofy murder mystery games to a day of service in Tacoma. It was 4 long days, and by the time classes started on the 18th, it felt like I had already been on campus for much longer than that!
I took my last final on Monday, and turned in my last paper on Tuesday… so, I was finished with my Puget Sound academics after that. Sunday is graduation (keep all of your appendages crossed in hopes that the forecast for rain changes). My family gets here Saturday. Everyone else is finishing finals. And I got my cap and gown on Tuesday. It’s all really starting to sink that that I’m GRADUATING. I’m having to fight back periodic bouts of tears to really soak in every last moment and be sure to put a positive spin on the last days in Tacoma.

What have I been up to in those 5 weeks since May 15th? For one, I have been working my summer job at a local garden center. Every day, I get to be outside surrounded by gorgeous flowers and wonderfully nice people. I am also constantly learning more about gardening and many other random conversations that I have with other employees and customers. It’s a pretty near-perfect summer job, if you ask me! More importantly, though, I am still looking for and applying to Admissions jobs. I have a phone interview next week for a position that has a heavy emphasis on social media use, which is really exciting! I have loved keeping this blog and using other social media outlets (especially the Facebook pages that I made for Relay For Life and the Gamma Phi Beta alumnae) to get the word out about Puget Sound and other organizations I was involved with. It would be amazing to delve further into that world while helping the Class of 2016 (and beyond) find their perfect campus… and getting paid to do it! Please think all the good interview thoughts that you have!
Commencement itself was the perfect ending to my three years at Puget Sound. Our classmate, Taylor, spoke to represent the Class of 2011 and his speech was just the right balance of funny, intelligent, and sentimental. Our honorary degree recipient and “guest speaker” was Cecilia Munoz (White House Director of Governmental Affairs) who urged us all to study, serve, and find silence when we can. She also brought along a letter from President Obama that Ron Thom read during Commencement. How cool is that?! I walked across the stage. We all sang the Alma Mater. And, just like that, with relatively few tears, I was a college graduate (with a diploma that would arrive “in 6-8 weeks”… and that actually arrived last Friday). My first task as a graduate was not to eat swanky food or don a suit, but to pack up my room. With my mom’s help, we did it in 2 hours, and hit the road (with a stop for Taco Del Mar along the way).

Only now have I begun to realize this photo’s applicability. The day I enrolled at Puget Sound I sat at the beginning of my journey, gazing upward, with no clear end in sight, teasing me; begging me to begin the climb. That hot August day in 2010 when I moved in to Harrington Hall, my climb began.
The academic experience at UPS is a better fit for me. I have now experienced the lecture hall with 400+ students and fully appreciate the small, discussion-based courses. Most of my classes at the U involved listening and thinking about ideas while classes at Puget Sound focus on discussing and sharing ideas. At Puget Sound, I am genuinely excited to go to class because my professors and fellow classmates alike challenge me to think in innovative ways. Classes of 10-20 students allow for high-powered academic conversations that are nearly impossible to reproduce in a lecture hall. Small class sizes give students an incentive to attend and be engaged in class because they feel like their voice matters.

Attending two very different institutions has given me a unique perspective. I have had the chance to immerse myself in both and determine what I value most in my college experience. I value the discussion-based classes, the five-minute walk to class, the serene yet magnificent beauty of campus and the Pacific Northwest, and the lasting friendships with students and professors alike. The list could go on. Overall, I am so thrilled to be back and for my final two years at Puget Sound.

Hello from the graduated side of a Puget Sound education. I wish I could tell you that graduation – and the 5 weeks since – have been along the lines of the 2009 hit (No? I was the only one that watched it? Okay…) Post Grad. You know the deal. Idyllic commencement ceremony on a palm tree-lined campus with the sun shining followed by a swanky family dinner. Cue the post-graduation professional interview that is inevitably ruined by traffic, spilled coffee, or even worse, the perfectionist classmate who is interviewing for the same position and woos the boss, getting the job and leaving you with a light brown shirt and a parking ticket. Throw in a few montages of job searches, personal growth, the requisite love interest, and the eventual good-conquers-evil job offer after the perfect archnemesis is fired and the protagonist gets a job… and the guy. Roll credits.

In my first year I spent at Puget Sound, I made friendships that have endured the test of time and distance. My friends come from states like California, Wyoming, Massachusetts, and Colorado, each of them with a unique and interesting perspective to share. The intimate size of UPS fosters strong friendships. Moreover, I found that students at the U get involved to make the school feel smaller while students at Puget Sound get involved to make the school feel bigger. That is, Puget Sound students join multiple organizations and form friendships with a vast number of the campus community. While the U offers more organizations, students must limit themselves more or they will be lost in the enormity of the student body. The tight-knit yet expansive community of Puget Sound is distinct and something I found essential to my college experience.

After Baccalaureate, I changed into my gown-appropriate black dress, donned my rain jacket, then my gown, and finally the clear poncho that Puget Sound provided us. I was off to graduate, but first, some pictures…
