San Diego State University - Niche

I was never a student here, rather I have visited many times to visit friends and have attended leadership conferences and graduations here.

San Diego State University is a large public comprehensive university in beautiful San Diego. The school has a lot of new renovations but also has a lot of old buildings. The library is partly underground and it is amazing. Their football team, the Aztecs, has a top football team and basketball- albeit they are in a small conference. The school pride shows!

All of the events I have been here have been a wonderful experience. They do their leadership conferences in their new student union, which by the way has a bowling alley and awesome food places to eat at. My friends love the professors here but keep in mind- they are not known as a research university! All of the people I have meet here have been very smart and nice. Overall, every time I have been here has been such a wonderful experience.

A San Diego State journalism professor shares her experience with “First Python Notebook”

I graduated from San Diego State in December 2016. I transferred in from Mesa College in the summer of 2014. Overall it took me 4 and half years to complete my degree, 2 years at Mesa and 2.5 years at SDSU. I majored in environmental engineering and minored in Geology. I thought a review would be good to provide my input in case any prospective engineering students end up reading this. San Diego State is a great school but I'm not going to sugar coat it with a 5 star review just because I'm an alumnus. It gets 4 stars because there's definitely room for improvement. I'm also way too biased to give you an objective review that would let me rate my school less than 4 stars.

Pro's:

Value: I chose SDSU over other schools mainly because it had the ABET accreditation that added to the value of my degree. I was accepted to other schools as well that had the same accreditation but SDSU was the better choice because of the tuition was considerably less than UC's. The classes I took at community college were immediately compatible meaning that I wouldn't have to repeat any classes either.

Engagement: SDSU has a social atmosphere that makes it easy for students to students to get involved on campus.

Campus: For a large university with over 33,000 students, it's surprisingly space efficient school. There are large lecture halls and a lot more smaller classrooms. There's also several student housing complexes surrounding campus. Super nice looking campus and historical Spanish architecture distinguishes itself from other schools. The gym is huge and has a great pool. There's also several new additions and and improvements to campus such as the new engineering and interdisciplinary building and south campus plaza. The aztec student union was a great decision by the administration. The student union is a new LEED Platinum building with plenty of meeting rooms for campus organizations as well as a large event hall and movie theatre. There's also a habit burger, Oggi's, and Chipotle in the student union. Oggi's is the only place on campus that serves alcohol, beer only but decent selection.

Parking: Don't listen to other people who complain about parking here. There's always open parking spaces in parking 17. It's not a secret either. The parking situation isn't nearly as bad as UCSD or Mesa College.

Con's:

Location: Yes it's in San Diego but it's not in that great of a part of town for San Diego. The college area is closer to East County than the beach. It's about 20 minutes away from Mission Beach.

Safety: The area has its fair share of homeless and transient people that randomly cruise through the campus. One time a crack head started panhandling in front of east commons during finals.

Students: Don't expect to run into high caliber students very often. I felt like I was surrounded by smarter more motivated people at some of the community colleges I've been to. The campus reflects the party school vibe accurately. Not saying that there are no smart people that go to SDSU, it's selective for high school grads but it's no Berkeley.

Engineering departments: It seems like every semester that I've been here there's been some sort of mistake that impacts the students in a negative way somehow. Some professors in the engineering department are really really bad at teaching. But there are some that are also really good. No surprise that most of the worst are tenured.

Food options: While there are some semi healthy options on campus, the salad bistro used to be the best bet for a decently affordable salad bar. There's an organic restaurant in west commons but its way over priced like most everything on campus.

Conclusion:

Overall the school's reputation is improving and I think it will remain a competitive school. Get involved and make the most out of your time here. There are a lot of opportunities to take advantage of, so make the most of it. Track your courses, plan out your graduation accordingly. Not every class is offered every semester. Don't settle for bad professors, it can make or break your GPA. Have fun, it's college.

As a digital journalism educator at San Diego State University, I am always seeking to provide my students with the latest skills to help them be the best journalists they can when they enter the job market. This past spring I had the opportunity to introduce my students to the Python scripting language via the developed by Ben Welsh and the California Civic Data Coalition.

Cal-SOAP manages a team of highly trained college students to serve as the program's primary resource of outreach. These College Peer Advisors (CPAs) are trained to provide support for school counseling personnel in San Diego and Imperial County high schools. CPAs address the needs of high school students through 1:1 conferences, in classroom presentations and in small groups. At these sessions, information is disseminated about college options, the college application process, financial and career options, essay writing and scholarship search. Additionally, CPAs serve as role models -- those students who have successfully navigated the often choppy waters of college admissions and financial aid.

As a current college student attending SDSU, I wish that I could rate my score higher. The Business program here is good, even though most of the professors just read off of power point slides. There's not enough team projects and presentations offered for students in Business to prepare them for the real world. It's mostly just dealing with stressful exams. It would be nice if the campus offered more online courses and degree programs that benefit their students who need flexibility. Many of us have to work in order to be able to afford completing our degrees here. Several college campuses throughout California offer this alternative as well as others all over the U.S. I wish that San Diego State would consider doing the same. Overall, the campus is beautiful, but I feel that much of our money is being spent on making it look pretty instead of investing it towards better options for students and their academic needs for success. SDSU is old school when it comes to learning and not up to par with today's academic alternatives. Finding parking around campus has also been difficult as I'm sure several students take the risk of getting tickets without paying for a day pass.
