Letters of Recommendation
You will need about three letters of recommendation. These letters of recommendation are vital to the success of your application. They will demonstrate your abilities to succeed in a graduate school environment and will demonstrate your fit in the field. The best people to ask for letters of recommendation are those who can write in most detail about your work and ability. Some examples of good letter writers are: a professor you have worked for as a research assistant, a professor you took a small class with and really got to know, or a supervisor for an internship or volunteer position you have held.
In general you will want to provide two to three of your letters from faculty members (at least one of those should be within your major) and possibly one letter from a supervisor of an internship or volunteer experience. It is preferable that all three letters are from faculty members, but if you only have two strong letters doing one from a supervisor will suffice.

Personal Statement
The personal statement is going to be your one opportunity to communicate with the admissions committee and demonstrate why you should be admitted to the program. Be sure to carefully research the program and show why you are a good fit with the program and profession, elaborate on your experiences and demonstrate what they have taught you about the field, and communicate your passion for this field and what you hope to accomplish. It is hard to write about yourself, but be sure to give yourself the credit you deserve. For PsyD programs you may be seeking to work with a specific member of the faculty. If so, be sure to mention their name and demonstrate the fit of your interests with theirs.
Not only is your personal statement a chance for you to show why you should be admitted, but it is also a writing sample. Be sure to write a clear, concise, and error free personal statement. This is not a creative writing piece or a letter, but an essay, so be sure to follow a logical format with an introduction, thesis statement, examples, and a conclusion. Since this is such a critical part of your application start early and have several people read it.
