Logistically, the character report card had been a challenge to pull off. Teachers at all four KIPP middle schools in New York City had to grade every one of their students, on a scale of 1 to 5, on every one of the 24 character indicators, and more than a few of them found the process a little daunting. Some admissions have read upwards of 1,000 essays a year over the course of several decades; they’re critical readers, and, as a gut-check, they might try to compare the writing sample in front of them to everything else they know about the applicant, such as his or her grades in English or what the student’s teachers say.

This is an admittedly limited anecdotal piece of information, but I definitely feel that an admissions officer would be able to distinguish the voice of youth from the voice of maturity — basically, parents and teachers are way more measured. As I read my daughter’s essays, there were things that made me cringe a little — not bad things, just things that seemed to be a little too unguarded, conveying the excesses of youthful enthusiasm that would be totally absent from anything I would ever consider appropriate for submission. Naturally, she told me to buzz off when I gently asked whether some of these things might be said a little less stridently.
the best thing you can do is try out a lot of ideas. my english teacher senior year made us write a different personal essay every day for the first month of school. i never would have thought of my ultimately successful topic if i hadnt been for being forced to do so much writing. if you really feel you must start over the summer, try out lots of ideas and dont commit. ask an english teacher or recent ivy grad for advice, your parents may not have the best sense of a relevant and not trite topic.
