It is a good idea to complete and submit secondary applications as soon as you can after your centralized application is submitted. While your goal should be to have your AMCAS/AACOMAS/TMDSAS application, MCAT scores, secondary applications and letters of recommendation submitted to the medical schools as soon as realistically possible, you should make sure to submit all materials by the end of August. Many medical schools begin to review completed applications in mid-summer. Remember it is your responsibility through this entire process to make sure your files are complete at the medical schools and that everything is received in a timely fashion. The application process will take place over several months, and so careful planning from the outset is important.

I am a 23 african american female who is also a 7 year cancer survivor. I am a US citizen and am really struggling financially. I am blessed enough to have a mom who loves and supports me in every possible way. However, she does not earn nearly enough to put me through college, but apparently makes too much for me to receive any financial aid- according to the government. I am an honors student with a 4.0 GPA and am very passionate about receiving a college education. I have tried tirelessly to pay for my own classes semester by semester. I have completed maybe a year and a half trying to do this on my own. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to come up with the money to pay for any more classes and have had to drop out of school, which breaks my heart. I feel that with the grades, drive and desire that I have to finish school and really make something of myself, there must be someone out there who has been through what I am going through and has the means to help me. As a 16 year old in high school, I was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer. I stood up to it and battled it like a soldier. Now here I stand, at 23 years of age, facing yet another battle, to be the second person in my family to go to college (my mom being the first) and come out with a degree. It suddenly occurred to me that this should be no where near as difficult a battle as fighting breast cancer at the age of 16. There must be an organization out there able and willing to put a 23 year old breast cancer survivor with a 4.0 GPA through college. PLEASE HELP!!!
I am 33 yr old mom of 5 kids. When I was 15 I had to quit school and take care of my dad who was ill. 2 yrs ago I got my GED. Now I am enrolling in school to get my occupational associates in medical assisting degree. I can get some pell grant funding but would leave me with a balance of 20,000.00 in student loans. With 5 kids I need all the money i can get to pay my bills so if I have loan payments it would have to come out of my bill money each month. My mom died when I was 15 and she was a nurse and I looked up to her for taking care of people who were sick. And my dad never could read or write, and he passed away 5 yrs ago. I want this not just for me but also to make them proud and show to myself and to my family that i can make a difference in this world even if it is only one person at a time. God bless.

Medical schools differ in their procedures for providing secondary applications to applicants. Most medical schools will automatically provide a secondary application to all applicants whereas other medical schools prescreen the processed centralized applications and only invite the top candidates to submit a secondary application. For Texas residents, the Texas medical schools make their secondary applications available through the TMDSAS web site, and they should be completed as soon as you submit your TMDSAS application.

The process for receiving secondary applications also varies from school to school. Some medical schools will email you and give you access to their secondary applications, while others are posted on the schools’ web sites to be downloaded when you are ready. You should visit each school’s admissions office web site to see if the secondary is posted there. If the secondary application is available, read the instructions carefully because some medical schools do not want you to submit the secondary application until after they contact you. If it has been 3-4 weeks since the verification of your AMCAS or AACOMAS application, and you have not received a secondary application from a particular medical school, you can then contact the school to ask about the availability of their secondary application.

Some organizations do, however, attach requirements to grant funding and will demand the repayment of grants if those conditions are not met. For example, certain federal teaching grants mandate that graduates teach in low-income school districts for a certain number of years in order to retain their grant status. Otherwise, the funds will be converted into student loans that must be repaid. Some medical school and nursing program pay for all costs of attending college in exchange for at least two years of service in disadvantaged areas or locations with a shortage of medical personnel. If a grant carries any of these stipulations, the criteria will be identified on the application document. Most organizations are upfront about these requirements because they do not want to risk non-payment later.
