How Long Should Your College Application Essay Be?
As a high school senior working on college apps, I started with MIT’s application. Unlike other colleges, MIT doesn’t have one long essay; it has several shorter prompts. I feel this allows me to reveal more sides of myself, though perhaps not in the depth that 500 words would allow. In any case, I’ve expanded several of these shorter 250-word prompts into longer 500 word essays.
My college counsellor told me that most admissions officers stop reading after about 500 words anyways (she used to read apps for U of Michigan). Although there was no word limit, I cut mine down from almost 800 words to 400 something words. It was the best thing I could have done to my essay. Even though the longer version later won two writing awards, the shorter one packed more of a punch and was more appropriate for the task at hand, no matter how “elegant” all those extra words might have been.

Says: This is a risky quote with which to begin an essay. After all, it is difficult to imagine a more time-worn or oft-repeated statement. However, this introduction goes on to apply this quote in a relatively unique manner. The contrast between such a standard quotation and such an interesting application will likely catch your readerâs attention.
Quotation Introduction: Many writers are tempted to start their essay with a quote. You should try to resist this temptation, as most quotes will look forced. Admissions officers will be turned off if it is apparent that you searched through a book of famous quotes and came up with a quote from some famous philosopher about whom you know nothing. The quotation introduction is most effective when the quote you choose is unusual, funny, or obscure, not too long, and from those to whom you are closest. Choose a quote with a meaning you plan to reveal to the reader as the essay progresses. The admissions committee is interested in how you respond to the quote and what that response says about you.

My favorite feature was how Ciobot had an LED screen for eyes, which allowed it to show status messages or alerts.I presented Ciobot, the cheerful, data processing robot to the team, and explained how I wanted him to lend our rather complicated application a more friendly and human feel.Enter Diana, who chimed in saying something along the lines of,“It’s not so humanizing if he’s a robot.”She was right.A simple shape wasn’t enough.
Says: With one word, this introduction takes an essay question about the person who has most influenced you and turns it back around to the admissions board. In effect, you are telling them that you have thought about their question thoroughly. You have thought about it for so long that you have a couple of questions of your own - questions that have sparked an interesting commentary.

Says: This introduction is clear and to the point, and will prepare your reader for the ideas you want to discuss. However, it is rather unexciting and will not immediately engage your reader. As mentioned, you should try to preface it with a more creative statement. In addition, it makes one typical error. One should usually avoid using contractions in a formal essay, for example, "Iâve."

Says: This is a very effective introduction to an essay about your personality. Mentioning pride is a good way to indicate how important your beliefs and values are to you. In a sentence like this, however, it would be better to use "Throughout" rather than "Through." "Throughout" better expresses the widespread, expansive tone you want to give this sentence.

Comparing it to my extended essay for the University of Chicago (706 words), my Common App essay is definitely not as well written, nor is it as creative. However, it does everything that it needs to do. Forcing myself to write a short essay was much harder than having free reign, but in the end, it demonstrates economy of language and forced me to carefully consider word choice and the effectiveness of what I was trying to say.
How Long Should A College Admission Essay Be
I’m applying to med school now and the word count is laughable-I’ve had essays with 50 word limits, 300 word limits and 10000 character limits-all too short to say what I want to say. Editing my writing is the biggest thing I’ve learned throughout this process-so a word limit might not be the worst thing ever-at least the students will be prepared for grad school, medical school and law school applications.

500 words is plenty for a college application essay. College admissions officers aren’t just looking for a good story. If you go too far above the word limit, that says something about your ability to state your ideas concisely.
