Should new graduate registered nurses practice in the ED? Although some nurses may immediately respond with "no!" this is not a simple "yes" or "no" question. Nursing shortages may direct a hospital's decision about whether new nurses should be hired to work in the ED. Long gone are the days when it was universally accepted that new nurses must gain experience and critical thinking skills prior to working in any critical care area. Studies show that new nursing graduates have unique challenges - specifically the difficulty associated with connecting theory to reality in the clinical arena (Baumberger-Henry, 2012). Additionally, new nurses may struggle with being able to initiate nursing interventions, prioritization, and time management when caring for multiple patients (Glen, & Silva, in press). Two recent studies address new nursing graduates in the ED from two different perspectives: that of the preceptor/mentor (Baumberger-Henry) and that of the new graduate (Glen & Silva). Although the focus of these studies were opposite, the results were congruent. Both studies found that orientation for the new nurse needs to be tailored to the specific learning needs of the orientee with adequate time allowed to advance to practice independently of the preceptor/mentor. According to the authors this may range from 6 to 12 months. Both studies also identified difficulties with new graduates being accepted by their peers in the ED. Unfortunately, new nurses may be treated in such a way as to negatively influence their willingness to ask questions from their more experienced colleagues. One participant of the study, which explored the perceptions of those orienting the new nurse, shared this: "I work with a nurse who is a very rough person but also one of the most brilliant nurses I have ever worked with. However, she has 'killed' so many nurses. She would sit at the desk and look at the new graduates and say that some of them won't make it, that they shouldn't be nurses, or that they are stupid" (Baumberger-Henry, p. 301). As nurses, we all have a responsibility to address such behaviors when we observe them - failure to do less condones and may actually promote the behavior (Baumberger-Henry). Glen & Silva (in press) note that "...the relationship between orientee and preceptor was a key element in the success of the new graduate."
