Our goal in admissions is to attract the best students to the college. Many people believe “best” ought to be defined by standardized tests, grades, and class rank, and it is easy to understand why. Such a system, another Harvard dean of admissions, Bill Bender, wrote in 1960, “has great appeal because it has the merits of apparent simplicity, objectivity, relative administrative cheapness in time and money and worry, a clear logical basis and therefore easy applicability and defensibility.”

Harvard admissions officers, who serve as area representatives, read every application from their assigned areas. They record all data, contact the applicant and school for missing materials, and comment on the application’s strengths and weaknesses. Some applications receive as many as four readings and each reader checks factual data recorded and, more importantly, offers additional interpretations of the folder.

The transfer application deadline is March 1.

with the advent of new technology, why not simulcast classes to expand the reach of the University and access to a Harvard Education for all that want it?

I attended a top rank small liberal arts college, earned a Ph.D. at a top ranked, medium sized university and carried out post-doctoral work for 5 years at Harvard including assisting in undergraduate education and can provide some individual perspective. Then then went on to work at advanced research institutes which run advanced graduate studies. My undergraduate roommate transferred from Harvard after his first year by choice and was glad of it. Al daughter of a colleague of mine who graduated from Harvard rued the day she decided to go to Harvard – to advanced and specialized. There is a warning here to admissions and applicants. My experience and evaluation revealed that Harvard is directed more to graduate and advanced studies than undergraduate studies. You will get less attention as an undergraduate than at a small liberal arts college and your curriculum will not be as well developed since the major emphasis of the Harvard academics is on their advanced study programs. Programs at the top small liberal arts colleges are likely to be better thought out for the undergraduate and although your Professors may not be world class academics, that is less important at the undergraduate level where mastering of basic skills and engagement with and by interested and creative faculty is a lot more important. For many, like myself, it proved better to develop the background that can be used to take advantage of all that Harvard can offer before jumping in to this environment which can then prove a remarkably enriching experience.

The latter is especially important, Jordan says, because transfer admission officials generally pay close attention to details about each applicant too. She pointed out that although the National Association for College Admission Counseling says as many as one in three students enrolled in a two- or four-year college or university will at some point transfer, most school admission officials are able to give potential transfer students more personalized attention than first-time undergrads, since the overall volume of transfer applications is lower.

Our holistic review allows us to consider each applicant's unique circumstances and educational background. We recognize that many of our transfer applicants have followed non-traditional routes to higher education, and we welcome the diverse perspectives these students bring to campus. Additionally, we understand that family, personal or financial circumstances may prevent students from participating in traditional extracurricular activities; use the application to explain your specific situation.

OUR TOP TIPS FOR WRITING SUCCESSFUL TRANSFER APPLICATION ESSAYS: ..

The flood of applications to Harvard makes their admissions committees’ work difficult, and ultimately partly arbitrary. Any parent or student applying should know that: many many qualified applicants don’t get in, and the difference between those who do and those who don’t is largely a matter of luck.

In his transfer application essay he wrote: ..

I see too many students get hung up on the ranking of a school. While that’s a factor that they should consider, it’s not the most important factor. In other words, just because Harvard is ranked #1, that doesn’t mean that it should be #1 on YOUR list. Pick a school that suits you well. If that means that you go to Wesleyan U instead of Harvard, then fabulous. You’ll probably do better at WU, because you love the place!

I do alumni interviews for the university’s admissions, sometimes, and I always struggle, knowing that among the applicants I talk to, about 2-4% will be admitted. Is it worth their time (not to mention mine)? Perhaps it is, if only because the interviews are enjoyable for me, and I hope the respect and seriousness I try to show the applicants helps them learn something, and practice their self-presentation. Of course, I also use the interview to pitch my own university and other possibilities (and yes, I tell the local Harvard committee in advance that I will do this!)

Harvard has a big name and is very highly ranked, and I guess that’s what many people are after. But having heard what the Harvard Experience is actually like, I’m very happy to have chosen a smaller school.

So as you work on your transfer essays, really focus on the story of your evolution and exploration of your reasons for wanting to transfer. Community college students can write about second chances and the ways community college and various experiences helped them find their academic and career passions. Four year college students can talk about experiences that led to wanting to transfer but please, never ever blame your original college. You can talk about outgrowing a major or wanting a different setting, but never sound bitter.
