Academic Introduction: This is the type of introduction you would use for a standardized test or a history paper. A typical standard introduction answers one or more of the six basic questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how. It gives the reader an idea of what to expect. You should try to stay away from simply restating the question unless you are limited by a word count and need to get to the point quickly. Your basic academic introduction or thesis statement is best used as the follow-up sentence to one of the more creative introductions described below.

The common app asks for in depth topics such as describe the influence of a significant person on you. Something that would be hard to get down into 250 word. If that person moved you so much how is it you have so little to say.

Question Introduction: Many admissions essays begin with a question. While this is an easy way to begin an essay, admissions officers may perceive it as a "lazy introduction." No one wants to read an essay that begins with such tacky material as: "To be or not to be?" or "Are you looking for an applicant who has drive and determination? Well, I’m your guy." If you are going to use a question, make sure that it is an extremely compelling one and that your experiences provide answers.

Says: This introduction is indeed compelling, but it raises important questions about appropriate content. Be careful to avoid writing a personal essay that is far too personal. You do not want your reader to think that you might have character weaknesses that prevent you from handling stressful situations well.

I review web articles for a living. I can look at an article and know immediately its approximate word count. While many meaningful essays can fit into 250-500, some cannot and should not be forced to. Though I can tell you anything over 650 words will start to lose the reader.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on this. What do you think of the Common App’s new essay prompts? Are you upset that the “topic of your choice” is no longer an option? Please join the discussion in the comments box below.

Guide to the 2017-18 Common Application Essay Prompts

I’m applying to med school now and the word count is laughable-I’ve had essays with 50 word limits, 300 word limits and 10000 character limits-all too short to say what I want to say. Editing my writing is the biggest thing I’ve learned throughout this process-so a word limit might not be the worst thing ever-at least the students will be prepared for grad school, medical school and law school applications.

500 words is plenty for a college application essay. College admissions officers aren’t just looking for a good story. If you go too far above the word limit, that says something about your ability to state your ideas concisely.

As a high school senior working on college apps, I started with MIT’s application. Unlike other colleges, MIT doesn’t have one long essay; it has several shorter prompts. I feel this allows me to reveal more sides of myself, though perhaps not in the depth that 500 words would allow. In any case, I’ve expanded several of these shorter 250-word prompts into longer 500 word essays.

How to Write a Great College Application Essay

Comparing it to my extended essay for the University of Chicago (706 words), my Common App essay is definitely not as well written, nor is it as creative. However, it does everything that it needs to do. Forcing myself to write a short essay was much harder than having free reign, but in the end, it demonstrates economy of language and forced me to carefully consider word choice and the effectiveness of what I was trying to say.
