There is a real disconnect between what Admission Committee Representatives in the Info Sessions say they are looking for and these essay topics. College Reps say they would like to know something interesting about you that isn’t revealed in your application. Your essay is supposed to add “texture” to your application. Bring back the topic of choice!

As a clinical psychologist and professional essayist (I wrote a weekly series of essays for the NYTimes some years back), I’ve helped thousands of urban public school kids write their college essays. 6 Tips For Writing the Common Application Essay

Great essay choices!!! Very staight forward and conceptually easy to deal without the help of professional help (college advisors). Atleast they are not ambigious and overlapping like the previous ones. Option 6 was a very vague choice and most students chose to write essays that were meant for 1-5. Sample College Application Essay 1 - Get Ready for College

As a junior in high school preparing for the college application process, I have no problem with the loss of the “topic of your choice” category.
