2017-2018 Common Application Essay Prompts
“We are pleased to share the 2017-2018 Common Application essay prompts with you. The changes you see below reflect the feedback of 108 Common App member colleges and more than 5,000 other Common App constituents, as well as consultation with our advisory committees and Board of Directors. Students represented the single largest share of constituent survey respondents (59%), followed by school counselors (23%), and teachers (11%).
This is the part of the application that should be removed. Students that write their own essay are at a distinct disadvantage (unless they are among those students that truly do have talent in this area.) Because the stakes are so high and the competition so great, more and more families are hiring consultants to either write or heavily edit the essays. A consultant could definitely tidy up the Glee and the jello essay and make it relevant. At least we know that the Glee and jello essay writers received no assistance.

Take a minute and think about the college or university admission officers who will be reading your essay. How will your essay convey your background and what makes you unique? If you had the opportunity to stand in front of an admission committee to share a significant story or important information about yourself, what would you say? The college application essay is your chance to share your personality, goals, influences, challenges, triumphs, life experiences, or lessons learned. Not to mention why you're a good fit for the college or university—and why it's a good fit for you. These are the stories behind the list of activities and leadership roles on your application.
One of the most common struggles students encounter is resisting the urge to squeeze everything they’ve seen, done, and heard into their essay. But your application essay isn’t your life story in 650 words. Instead, pick one moment in time and focus on telling the story behind it.

As a rising high school senior…I have to say these essay prompts are disappointing at best. I find little inspiration in any of the five prompts; though it has been pointed out that the first is broad, I would describe it not as open-ended but as simply vague in what it asks. I plan to stretch one prompt or another to fit my needs, but at this point I don’t feel terribly optimistic about the outcome.
Teachers wishing to develop this lesson into a more complete unit on the college essay might focus more on crafting the essay itself using this lesson on coupled with the resources from . Students might also find useful.

The Common Application Announces 2017-2018 Essay …
I would argue that the admissions committee was able to relate a little more to this essay than the first. And it was certainly more evocative and detailed. It also conveyed more about the writer (and applicant) — a crucial quality in a college admissions essay.

As a clinical psychologist and professional essayist (I wrote a weekly series of essays for the NYTimes some years back), I’ve helped thousands of urban public school kids write their college essays. The “topic of your choice” always allowed them the breadth they needed to start writing with no agenda — like therapy — and then find themselves transformed. The current prompts short-circuit that developmental process. A big loss.
19 Common Application Essay Mistakes and How to …
As a junior in high school preparing for the college application process, I have no problem with the loss of the “topic of your choice” category. As SM said, it the first option really is just a rewording of that. No one would have written about something irrelevant or unessential to their application. The five options also give more structure to the process of application, eliminating the worry of writing something that wasn’t what the college was asking for.

Activity | Tell students that they will have the opportunity to expand on the ideas they discussed at the beginning of class by drafting an essay in response to one of the prompts, but first, they are going to comb The New York Times for models of each topic and look closely at them to see how others have told their stories and what they might learn about how to effectively tell their own. (Note: Many of the pieces we’ve chosen as “mentor texts” below, are either by or about young people, but some are not. Please use the choices as suggestions only: there are many, many pieces in The Times weekly that fit the Common App prompts well.)
