College Common Application College common application …
There is a real disconnect between what Admission Committee Representatives in the Info Sessions say they are looking for and these essay topics. College Reps say they would like to know something interesting about you that isn’t revealed in your application. Your essay is supposed to add “texture” to your application. These new essay topics will produce really boring essays, with many students beating their own chests or writing sad tales about a death in the family or another type of loss. Bring back the topic of choice!
Reading sample college application essays are also an excellent way to understand the structure of an admission essay. Many essays written in college prep classes emphasize scholarly format in writing, which avoids pronouns, personal experience, and is structured along a quote-commentary-commentary format. This structure is not applicable to a college admission essay, which is based on just the opposite (personal experience being the crux). Well-done samples provide an education in format. It becomes easier to properly arrange your own argument after getting an approximation about how other people are talking about themselves.
2017-18 Common Application Essay Prompts: Tips, …
Great essay choices!!! Very staight forward and conceptually easy to deal without the help of professional help (college advisors). Atleast they are not ambigious and overlapping like the previous ones. Option 6 was a very vague choice and most students chose to write essays that were meant for 1-5. Afterall, they are 17- 18 year olds so dont expect them to dig out existential essays.
For the first topic, most students don’t (have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it).
Guide to the 2017-18 Common Application Essay Prompts
The Common App will still be a stickler for essay lengths, as we reported in October. However, the maximum has increased to 650 words. (The previous limit was 500 words.) The Web-only application will not accept essays with fewer than 250 words.
There are some mistakes that are common. People write "cite" instead of "site", or spell "hummus" when they mean "humus". These are the kind of errors that are easy to miss, even when reviewing your paper multiple times. Often students are reminded that they should go the extra mile with grammar and spelling, but putting that advice to practice is difficult. Reading sample college admission essays provide an opportunity to observe not only which errors might be most common (and thus, things to look out for), but also to appreciate the importance of good grammar and provide enough willpower for yet another read-through.

6 Tips For Writing the Common Application Essay
As a junior in high school preparing for the college application process, I have no problem with the loss of the “topic of your choice” category. As SM said, it the first option really is just a rewording of that. No one would have written about something irrelevant or unessential to their application. The five options also give more structure to the process of application, eliminating the worry of writing something that wasn’t what the college was asking for.

Perfect College Essay for Common App - Great College …
As a clinical psychologist and professional essayist (I wrote a weekly series of essays for the NYTimes some years back), I’ve helped thousands of urban public school kids write their college essays. The “topic of your choice” always allowed them the breadth they needed to start writing with no agenda — like therapy — and then find themselves transformed. The current prompts short-circuit that developmental process. A big loss.
