BOB SWEENEY: In my view, the experience in Peru will only enhance a college application, not diminish it. I assume she is taking an academic program comparable to what she would at her own school. I don’t think there is anything to do to maximize the impact — just let her enjoy it and learn. The experience may give her something to write about in an essay, which should not be a travel log but more about what she learned about herself from the experience. Having spent a year in Peru, she will likely be much more ready to leave home and go off to college when the time comes.

I would reemphasize the importance of students and their families respecting deadlines for aid applications because the clearest way many colleges may have to control growing pressure on financial aid budgets may be to stick to those deadlines. Increasing numbers of students in recent years have delayed filing financial aid applications, sometimes because of costs and sometimes because of the paperwork. They have waited until after an offer of admission was extended. This delays getting an aid package and this year, could result in outright denial of support even for students who have need. Don’t dawdle in filing!

This is not to say that my school doesn’t have its fair share of future investment bankers who and I stereotype heavily, here still cite their perfect SAT scores in proclaiming their self worth. But I would still be hard pressed to name any friend, any acquaintance at my school who was never involved in the creation of something new. In college, it’s the creating, it’s the making that won’t stop.
