BOB SWEENEY: In my view, the experience in Peru will only enhance a college application, not diminish it. I assume she is taking an academic program comparable to what she would at her own school. I don’t think there is anything to do to maximize the impact — just let her enjoy it and learn. The experience may give her something to write about in an essay, which should not be a travel log but more about what she learned about herself from the experience. Having spent a year in Peru, she will likely be much more ready to leave home and go off to college when the time comes.

LINDA LAUERMAN/FRANK CASSO: Your G.P.A. and SAT do meet the requirement for Brown, but keep in mind its eclectic nature and tailor your application to that through your essays, extracurricular activities, recommendations and community involvement. Since you are interested in English and law near New York, you may want to apply also to N.Y.U., Boston University, Boston College, Columbia, Barnard, Penn, Fordham, Georgetown, Yale, George Washington or American University.

I would reemphasize the importance of students and their families respecting deadlines for aid applications because the clearest way many colleges may have to control growing pressure on financial aid budgets may be to stick to those deadlines. Increasing numbers of students in recent years have delayed filing financial aid applications, sometimes because of costs and sometimes because of the paperwork. They have waited until after an offer of admission was extended. This delays getting an aid package and this year, could result in outright denial of support even for students who have need. Don’t dawdle in filing!

As much as we might see the American experience as increasingly fractured, college can never be anything but an incredibly collective experience. In college, everyone is learning about something, and everyone is learning together and all at once. We spend half our days studying literature or history or engineering, half our days immersed in thought in class. But the greatest thing about college is that we are not content to stop at the consumption of the ideas of others presented to us by our professors; we want to make something ourselves. We are directing short films, we are writing plays. Every college student has a handful of friends they would consider artistic. But in delegating all creative responsibility to our supposedly, apparently quirkier friends, we’re selling ourselves short. This is not to say that my school doesn’t have its fair share of future investment bankers who and I stereotype heavily, here still cite their perfect SAT scores in proclaiming their self worth. But I would still be hard pressed to name any friend, any acquaintance at my school who was never involved in the creation of something new. In college, it’s the creating, it’s the making that won’t stop.

December College Checklist for Seniors - The New York Times

In my own experience, I find that college today has become a business, and a highly profitable one at that. Beginning in high school, the average student pays to take the standardized tests required by admissions, if not classes and books to prepare. Then come the onslaught of application fees, entrance fees and tuition, which even at state schools continues to rise higher and higher. And finally, there is the price of books, which in and of itself smacks of racketeering. As a student, I was relieved when my textbooks were only $300 per quarter, and lucky when I was able to sell them back for a quarter of their original worth. Imagine my surprise when I went to the bookstore and was told that my books had no value. How could a book have no value?

I was told that college would be the greatest experience of my life. I would be free to choose my own path and I would find out exactly who I was. But on campus, it didn’t seem as though the student body was working too hard on discovering itself. Those who wanted to continue to graduate school were far too focused on their grades and contacts to do much else. The rest of my peers seemed to be only working towards that piece of paper, and usually for their parents, or simply because they knew that nowadays, it is an absolute necessity.

BOB SWEENEY: Counselors do voice their concerns about the many supplements now required with the Common Application. I do find the application helpful, especially now with online technology. However, I am not so sure colleges could come to an agreement about a form that fits all. Each college will tell you they have institutional needs and unique requirements for evaluating applicants. I can’t argue with that, especially if I wish they would forego their reliance on standardized tests, which I believe is a greater disservice to students than asking for supplemental information, which may say more about the student.

Mr. Brenzel of Yale: This question makes two false assumptions: that being deferred is a misery and that deferred candidates have relatively poor chances of admission. Though odds of admission to Yale are always long, each year we accept about the same percentage of the students deferred from the early round as we accept of the regular decision applicants. We are often looking to see how applicants perform in the first half of senior year, when many students are taking their most challenging schedules or seeing their primary activities outside the classroom bear fruit. At the same time, we do try very hard to give final decisions to as many students as possible, where we feel certain that we will simply not be able to offer admission in the spring. This year we let over 2,100 students know that we were closing our consideration of their applications, about 38% of our early candidates. Virtually all of these applicants were very strong students, who are going to attend great colleges and have great success. We only chose not to defer them so that they could focus wholeheartedly on their other applications.
