My essay fluctuated between 800 and 650 while I was drafting and my final product was 630 words. It took a lot of effort and time to get it down to 498 words but it was worth it. There’s no random fluff stuck to the end of sentences. I had to make sure that every sentence was relevant and important. I know that what I wrote about I could have expanded for pages longer but I also know that was I wrote is an accurate representation of my personal thoughts and reflections, written in a concise, clear manner in my own voice. For the common application that’s what matters.
Can i change my common app essay for different schools
I’m applying to med school now and the word count is laughable-I’ve had essays with 50 word limits, 300 word limits and 10000 character limits-all too short to say what I want to say. Editing my writing is the biggest thing I’ve learned throughout this process-so a word limit might not be the worst thing ever-at least the students will be prepared for grad school, medical school and law school applications.
That’s 1000 CHARACTERS, not WORDS. Then when my daughter uploaded a 997 character version, it turned out that the character count includes SPACES. After another round of cutting, a 1000 character essay with spaces comes out to 167 WORDS.

College advisor Alice Kleeman joins us today in our ongoing series on the changes to the Common Application with some excellent guidance for students and how to think about the new essay prompts and an entertaining look back on some of the essays that have been favorites in her twenty years advising students.
Here, again, the Common Application gives you a lot of options for approaching the question. With the ability to write about an "intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma," you can essentially write about any issue that you find important. Note that you do not have to have solved the problem, and some of the best essays will explore problems that need to be solved in the future. Be careful with that opening word "describe"--you'll want to spend much more time analyzing the problem than describing it. This essay prompt, like all of the options, is asking you to be introspective and share with the admissions folks what it is that you value.
