Sample College Admissions Essay - Student Teacher

I am a junior at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill and after having read most of the questions posed by parents and high school students alike, I would like to give a little input. I came from a small private college prep school in Bethlehem, PA. When I was a junior there, my top choice was Penn. I had everything I needed to get in: above a 4.0 GPA, the hardest list of classes offered at my school, a 1440 on the SAT (the old test, 790 in math, 650 in verbal), volunteer work, academic awards (including Cum Laude, an elite society for the top students at demanding private schools, and a scholarship from a local news paper) and many extracurricular activities. I was so excited to go there– it fulfilled all my dreams from a young child. After receiving the acceptance letter and visiting the prestigious school I realized it wasn’t for me. Too many people focus on the reputation of the Ivy league schools and don’t realize what is important to them. After reevaluating my interests I chose UNC. This remarkable school has the same acceptance rate for out-of-state applicants as Harvard. Few people besides college councilors and those who apply from out of state know this and every day I am here I am glad for it. The fact that UNC is a large school gives me tons of opportunities to get involved, like study abroad and undergraduate research in a microbiology lab, and I feel that the education that I am getting is just as good as an Ivy at the fraction of the cost. I urge all of you to give the public schools a second chance– you can get a great education and enjoy your college years at the same time, with less stress and pressure than the prestigious schools. Besides, if you plan on going to graduate schools, they care more about your grades than the school you went to, and after getting your second degree no one will even look at where you attended undergrad. Good luck- I know how you feel I was once there too and I made the best decision of my life.

LINDA LAUERMAN/FRANK CASSO: It is recommended that a 3.0 or better be established at your county college before applying to colleges. Participating in your college assembly and doing volunteer work would be important to N.Y.U. but only to Rutgers if you are applying for a specialized program; otherwise they require only a strong G.P.A. and SAT or ACT scores.

Dear Sir/Madame:
I have studied and worked at four institutions of higher education, that is a German university, an American public university, a Swiss university and an American private university. The hardest undergraduate class I remember taking in the US was a three-quarter course in Biochemistry for premedical students at the public school. Regardless of private or public, only a select few students I met were eventually accepted by medical schools affiliated with the Ivy League. Besides impeccable grades, the most influential factor seemed the MCAT score. Everybody felt the need to take MCAT review courses at extra expense.
Although higher education may cost a lot in the US, it is a commodity without a warranty. Success in college can not be bought. Rather, it depends on opportunities extended and accepted. The prospective student must decide in which environment her/his development may benefit the most. This may not necessarily be at the most prestigious school. The right college may not be the one that offers the poshest accommodations and the fastest access to career credentials. The right college may be the one that helps you find yourself and a productive role in life. Even under the most favorable conditions, however, a college education provides you only with a key. You must find the door to which this key fits and muster the courage to walk through it. There is no need to panic. You will prevail as long as you embrace the opportunities that present themselves with open eyes.

In response to questions from expats and prospective expats, I was surprised that you made no mention of the International Baccalaureate diploma, which is taught worldwide at most international high schools. US high schools are also rapidly adopting the IB. Top US colleges and universities are very familiar with this curriculum and give credit for students who have completed all or part of it. Many educators even consider IB courses superior to AP courses. As a former English teacher who has taught both AP and IB English, I found the IB intellectually more rigorous and pedagogically more sound. The courses are better integrated across disciplines and, because they are two-year classes, they enable students to delve more deeply into topics of interest. A student also has a variety of ways to demonstrate mastery of a subject since, in addition to the final exam, transcript scores are determined based on an oral examination and essays of varying lengths. Moreover, in the IB, these assessment componants are spread over the two years rather than being presented on a single test date.

I would also suggest you contact the admissions person who handles transfer students. The N.Y.U. Web site may be able to provide you with a name. That person would be able to advise you about requirements and chances for acceptance. One important question to ask: Are chances better if you wait to transfer after one year or two?
